Healing Hands Celebrates 9th Birthday with new FQHC Look-Alike Status

March 2016

We’ve grown a lot in 9 years! In 2007, we opened our doors with a mostly-volunteer staff that served those in need in our community one day a month.  Today, our clinic employs a staff of 45 to offer medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare to more than 7200 patients yearly.  Our future shines even brighter as we have just been awarded the status of a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-Alike! Happy 9th Birthday to Healing Hands Ministries!

IRA Rollover Signed Into Law

December 18, 2015

Because of recent legislative changes, if you are age 70½ or older it is once again possible to make tax-favored charitable gifts from your traditional or Roth IRA accounts directly to Healing Hands Ministries.

On December 18th the President signed into law legislation that retroactively extends the charitable IRA rollover for 2015, and makes this provision permanent for future years.  A total of up to $100,000 can be transferred directly from traditional or Roth IRAs to Healing Hands Ministries free from federal income tax each year.  Amounts given in this way count toward required IRA minimum withdrawal amounts for the year of the gift.

To make such gifts, it is important to not withdraw funds prior to a gift, but have the gift amount distributed directly from an IRA to one or more charities.  For those with check-writing privileges on their accounts, this may be the most efficient way to make gifts directly from an IRA.  This can also be welcome news for taxpayers who do not usually itemize their deductions and are not able to deduct their contributions, as well as for taxpayers who do itemize.

Check your IRA administrator or your tax advisor for more information or contact:

September 18, 2015

North Texas Giving Day is an online giving event that provides nonprofits the opportunity to gain exposure to new donors, and then hopefully continue that relationship.  This year’s event raised $33.1 million for 2000+ local nonprofits between the hours of 6 am and midnight.

Healing Hands Ministries received a total of $50,925 from the 177 who donated either through northtexasgivingday.org or through offline avenues.

HHM medical team recognized for screening over 1,100 patients for depression

July 15, 2015

The Healing Hands Ministries medical staff was featured as the University of Texas Southwestern Depression Center Clinic Spotlight after screening over 1,100 patients for depression since April 2015.

As part of the UT Southwestern VitalSign6 initiative, each patient at HHM is screened for depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9).  HHM medical providers refer patients whose answers indicate depression to their Behavioral Health department.

“VitalSign6 has given our patients a language to talk about what they are experiencing,” HHM medical director Dr. Chris Berry said.  “It has generated real communication and real therapeutic changes.”

HHM believes behavioral health plays a vital role in overall well-being.  Their integrated health care system treats the whole person— body, mind and spirit.

“It is not just the fact that we’re screening, it’s the fact that our patients are starting to understand the language of what they are experiencing internally,” Berry explained.  “That has opened up a different way of interacting with our patients that we didn’t have.”

Healing Hands Ministries to participate in North Texas Giving Day with  new goals and high hopes

July 20, 2015

Dallas County nonprofit medical and dental clinic Healing Hands Ministries hopes to raise a heroic $50,000 during North Texas Giving Day on September 17, 2015.

North Texas Giving Day is an online giving event that unites the people of North Texas under one charitable spirit and provides nonprofits the opportunity to gain exposure to and start relationships with new donors in their area.

In just six one-day events, Giving Day has pumped $89 million into local nonprofits and broken three national giving day records since 2009. Last year, more than 98,000 gifts totaling $26.3 million were donated, benefiting more than 1,580 local nonprofits.  Healing Hands Ministries’ efforts last year raised $40,000 from 183 donors.

All proceeds help the organization provide quality medical and dental care to area residents in need.  This year, the Dallas County nonprofit set the bar higher, encouraging its donors and partners to “Be A Hero” by raising $50,000 to support this mission.

“The dictionary says that a hero is someone who acts for the greater good from a position of danger or weakness,” Jim Young, HHM Director of Development explained.  “We are looking for heroes to help us reach our goal of medical care for the poor.”

The event was launched in 2009 by Communities Foundation of Texas, a philanthropy hub serving the northern region of the state.

“North Texas Giving Day is a rallying cry for our entire community to support the organizations that tirelessly protect and provide for our area’s greatest resources, from animals and the environment to women and children,” says Brent Christopher, president and CEO of Communities Foundation of Texas.  “The generosity that all of us experience on Giving Day not only fuels our local nonprofits financially, but energizes them to continue to do their great work.”

Healing Hands will host a Tailgate celebration that evening from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the intersection of Royal Lane and Greenville Avenue.  The free event will include food from local food trucks, local entertainment, and hero-themed photo booth, and games for the whole family.

According to Young, however, the true focus of the day is continuing to serve the community.

Young said, “Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy and we all know how expensive a visit to the doctor can be.  By meeting our goal we can provide quality medical care to more than 200 new patients.”

Clinic and offices expand into over 9,000 square feet of customized space in April 2013

April 2013

After a year-long capital campaign, Healing Hands Ministries expanded into 9,133 square feet of customized medical, dental and office space.

The clinic is located at the intersection of Royal Lane and Greenville Avenue in the Lake Highlands Dallas community.  The space includes 13 medical examination rooms, six dental chairs, a large waiting room, two employee break rooms, a conference room and administrative offices.

Patient Erika Caballaro and her five children began going to Healing Hands when the clinic was at its original location on Skillman Avenue.  According to Caballaro, the new facility is better equipped to serve its growing patient base.

“I went to the original location and transitioned here,” Caballaro said.  “This one is much better.  Now [the services] are all readily available.”

Jorge Avellaneda first came to Healing Hands for a physical examination and left with a diabetes diagnosis.  Now a regular medical and dental patient, he said the new HHM facilities are perfect, but he dreams of more growth in the future.

“I would like to see HHM be bigger and continue to help more people,” Avellaneda said.

Avellanada’s dreams may come true in upcoming years as Healing Hands Ministries’ leaders plan to expand further into over 10,000 square feet of space.
